Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is uploaded or saved. Type Calculator is an unofficial fan-made tool and is not affiliated with Nintendo, Creatures Inc., GAME FREAK inc. or The Pokémon Company. Species types come from the PokeAPI open data set and use each Pokémon’s current types.

How to use the type calculator

Start typing a Pokémon’s name and choose it from the list, or set Type 1 and Type 2 yourself. The results group all 18 attacking types by the damage they deal: 4× and 2× are weaknesses, ½× and ¼× are resistances, and 0× is an immunity. Regional forms, Mega Evolutions and other forms that change type are listed under their own names, such as Alolan Ninetales or Mega Charizard X.

For a Terastallized Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet, choose its Tera Type. Its defensive type then becomes that single type, so a Tera Water Charizard is no longer 4× weak to Rock. The Ability menu covers the common abilities that change type matchups, such as Levitate, Flash Fire and Thick Fat.

    • 4×: both of the Pokémon’s types are weak to the attack.
    • 2×: super effective.
    • ½× and ¼×: resisted by one or both types.
    • 0×: the attack has no effect.

    How dual-type weaknesses are calculated

A Pokémon with two types takes the product of both multipliers. Fire/Flying Charizard takes 2× from Rock because of Fire and another 2× because of Flying, which is 4×. Ground moves are 2× against Fire but 0× against Flying, so Charizard takes no damage from Ground. When one type is weak and the other resists, the two cancel out: Electric is 2× against Water and ½× against Grass, so it does normal 1× damage to a Water/Grass Pokémon.

What the calculator does not include

Type matchups are only one part of damage. Attack and Defense stats, the move’s power, weather, held items and critical hits all change the final number. Some moves and abilities have special rules, such as Freeze-Dry hitting Water types for 2× or Scrappy letting Normal and Fighting moves hit Ghost types. Use this calculator to read matchups quickly, then use a full damage calculator for exact numbers.

All 18 types in the current type chart

The current chart has 18 types: Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel, Fairy. Fairy was added in Pokémon X and Y (Generation 6), and that update also removed Steel’s resistance to Ghost and Dark. Every calculator on this site uses this chart, so results match Scarlet and Violet, Sword and Shield, Legends: Z-A and every main game since X and Y. Older games differ, and the guide to type chart changes explains how.

Quick facts from the type chart

A few patterns are worth remembering because they come up in almost every battle.

    • Steel resists 10 types and is immune to Poison, the best defensive type in the chart.
    • Fighting and Ground are super effective against five types each, more than any other attacking type.
    • Grass and Rock are each weak to five types.
    • There are eight type immunities, such as Ground against Electric and Dark against Psychic.
    • Normal moves are not super effective against anything, but Normal types are weak only to Fighting.

    A few helpful answers

    Before you begin.

    How do I find a Pokémon’s weaknesses?

Type its name into the type calculator, or choose its one or two types. The results list every type that does 2× or 4× damage to it, plus its resistances and immunities.

    What does 4× weakness mean?

Both of the Pokémon’s types are weak to the attack, so the two 2× multipliers stack to 4×. For example, Rock moves do 4× damage to Fire/Flying Charizard.

Does the calculator include Tera Types?

Yes. Choose a Tera Type and the Pokémon defends as that single type, as it does in Scarlet and Violet after Terastallizing.

Which games does the type calculator match?

Every main-series game from Pokémon X and Y onward, including Sun and Moon, Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A. Older games had a different type chart.

    Does the calculator include abilities?

It includes the common abilities that change type matchups, such as Levitate, Flash Fire, Water Absorb, Thick Fat and Wonder Guard. Choose one from the Ability menu.

Is this an official Pokémon tool?

No. Type Calculator is an unofficial, fan-made tool and is not affiliated with Nintendo, Creatures Inc., GAME FREAK inc. or The Pokémon Company.

    Do I need an account?

No. Everything works in your browser without signing in, and nothing you type is uploaded or saved.
